Art Athina 2023
September 14-17, 2023
Zappeion Megaro
Renewed, with a different structure and a new team, Art Athina 2023 is getting ready to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The largest annual art event in Greece will take place from Thursday, September 14, to Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Zappeion Megaro, under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
The Athenian fair, which is also one of the oldest in Europe, is organized by the Panhellenic Association of Art Galleries. In this year’s anniversary edition, it will host a total of 67 art spaces from Greece and nine foreign countries. The event includes a rich program of parallel events, dedications, discussions, and educational activities.
At the center of this year’s special event is the broader collaboration of a group of young dynamic curators, along with the dialogue of art spaces from Greece and abroad. The aim is for Zappeion Megaro to serve as a meeting and fusion point for the proposals of visual artists, whether represented by local galleries or those traveling to Athens from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Cyprus, the UK, Switzerland, Poland, and Romania.
The main exhibition program is consistently accompanied by a wide range of activities, including: Projects, where independent art spaces are presented curated by Olympia Tzortzi, Talks, discussions with esteemed guests around four different thematic axes curated by Danae Giannoglou, a section dedicated to Video curated by Akis Kokkinos, aiming to connect the audience with innovative visual material, as well as a focus on executive art and Performance curated by Panos Giannikopoulos, showcasing works and proposals presented to the Athens fair audience for the first time. The Kids’ Educational Program, designed by the non-profit international social organization KROMA, will also be present this year, aiming to familiarize young people with art and contribute to the creation of a new generation of art enthusiasts.
Design enthusiasts will find two special features in this year’s Art Athina 2023. The first is the exhibition “In Conversation with a Chair” by Mare Studio, where the chair – a common functional object – is transformed into an exhibit, taking us on a journey through Greek tradition, design, and craftsmanship, summarizing over 100 years of history with the signature of Greek creators.
In the “secret” garden of Zappeion Megaro, the Zappeion Garden x BlueCycle project will take place for the second year. BlueCycle is the unique Greek social enterprise of the blue and circular economy, comprehensively addressing the goal of protecting the marine environment. In the context of Art Athina, BlueCycle will create a comprehensive garden project with furniture and objects bearing its artistic and environmentally positive imprint.
A specially designed space will be dedicated to the anniversary album for the 30 years of Art Athina, published by the Panhellenic Association of Art Galleries and curated by Giannis Asdrachas. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover important moments, historical figures, artists, personalities from the artistic and political life that marked its distinctive and significant journey over these three decades, in a booth designed by Stavros Papagiannis.
For the second year, the Art Athina award for a young artist continues, aiming to support artistic creation in collaboration with the MOMus-Alex Mylonas Museum, one of the five museums of the Metropolitan Organization of Fine Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMus).
Visual artists up to 45 years old, living and working in Greece, and proposed by the galleries representing them, where they have held at least one solo exhibition, have the opportunity to participate.
