“THE STRING PROJECT”
Chelsea Nix & Mariano Cortez
Blank Wall Gallery hosts the work of two award-winning American photographers entitled “THE STRING PROJECT”as part of their international tour.
Chelsea Nix (USA) and Mariano Cortez (Argentina) are a husband and wife photography team recognized by National Geographic. They have been awarded for their work in a variety of photography competitions such as: Photographer International of the Year, Chromatic Photo Award and National Geographic’s Travel Photographer of the Year. Their work, THE STRING PROJECT, is a series of portraits that connect people from all over the world using a simple string. When exhibited, all their photos form one continuous line, a “visible representation symbolizing an invisible connection,”said Nix. It is both an art and a social experience sharing the idea that we are all connected. The project has since won the top vote at Art Prize, one of the world’s largest international art competitions.
THE STRING PROJECT features photographs from Africa, Europe, Asia, North and Latin America. To create this body of work, the couple traveled to over twenty countries in six months on budget of $30 a day. “Besides our cultural and physical differences there are essential similarities in all human beings that bring us together,”said Cortez. “The project highlights some of the most valuable things humans crave in life: respect, hope, peace, love, integrity… authentic and genuine interactions.”
In October 2019, the team took off for THE STRING PROJECT World Tour for viewing at outdoor public exhibits and indoor private galleries. The World Tour will take the team to five continents, as they continue to capture new “string photos,” inviting thousands to experience the project. Cortez and Nix are particularly excited to return to the communities where people have never been photographed before, giving them the opportunity to view their photograph and experience the impact of THE STRING PROJECT. The exhibit encourages cultural awareness, understanding, and unity through the common thread of art, conversation, empathy, and compassion.
The team will return to the states in May 2020 to prepare for the launch of their 1st Edition Book of and a short documentary to be shared with the public in the Fall of 2020. The string’s journey can also be followed around the world through Instagram, Facebook, and the “Behind The String”blog.
