by Dimitris Angelopoulos
In his Still Life exhibition, Dimitris Angelopoulos participates in a paradoxical game, giving this well-known and often falsified term, new life. By bringing his human subjects to the forefront, making them the absolute protagonist and focusing his compositions on them, he is depicting “stolen” moments from the rooms of his protagonists.
It makes us, therefore, viewers of this “still life” of the painter and his models, in compositions that one is the organic continuity of the other.
With this mindseat, Dimitris Angelopoulos borrows the term and creates paintings, usually of large dimensions but also smaller ones, where the anthropocentric composition is intense, with powerful and gestural brush strokes, the portraits are robust with a intense gaze, giving the impression that they are alive but at the same time they are stationary, immovable.
Dimitris Angelopoulos work is a proposal for a return to a more classical style of painting, focusing on great figuration. Despite his young age, he manages to create powerful images, indifferent to unnecessary details and distractions that reject fake symbolisms, resulting in the viewer becoming an integral part of an image that ultimately shocks him.
