“Seams in Time”

Maria Maragou about Voula Gounela’s work

“Returning one afternoon from Voula Gounelas’ atelier, I noted something about the Skyphos and the Cotylis (greek ancient vases), about the group of so-called pioneer potters of Attica in 590 BC, in relation to red-hot vases, in the 19th century abstraction, for the hard material of 20th-century sculpture, and the need of today, which remains the artist’s truth, beyond finding and inventing. The strong instinct and commitment to the project, far stronger than managing its production. In the works of Voula Gounela we’ll find the analysis of form in the geometrical shapes that make up their structure, the intersecting lines, the robust design of the original language, the history of the material from the time it became the raw material of the nest to the formation of protozoans and symbols in the world of the unknown life forms of the sculptor. The newest sculptures of V.G. refresh the game of materials, with the addition of porcelain. The possibilities and the difficulties that revise are the generations of shapes from the mythology of the symbols of life to reach the infinite seams in the body of fragile material. The dialogue with society leads to the seams and patches of the new treaty that are as old as the world. In the end, V.G.’s work requires a liberated mind and a pervasive conception to create the altars and offerings of our violent era.”
