Art historian and curator of the exhibition Olga Latousaki notices for the exhibition:

He was born in Russia, raised in Piraeus and lived all over the world. A corduroy, an intellectual fully accustomed to the harsh living conditions of seafarers, “an ideal lover of long voyages and sea-points”, a traveler who, when he was free from the shifts and not wandering through the infamous bars and houses, reads Baudelaire, Ouranis, Kariotakis and studies the painting of the Paris School.

All the above refer to Nikos Kavvadias, or the otherwise Petros Valhalla, A. Tapeino (Humble)  – as he originally signed – “Marabu” – from his homonymous poem – or, for his closest person, Kollia. No matter what was said by the world of Athenian intellectuals and classical poets about himself, he was a tender, sensitive soul. Indeed, according to his painter and friend, Vassilis Sperantza, whom the poet greatly inspired during his life, Kavvadias was “a bright ray in a harsh world”. The ships and the sea were his pretext for the dream, the escape from reality, the means for the elusive concept of the infinite.

Of course, the concept of loneliness and lack of companionship is not negligible in the work of the devil, which is a very common and familiar to all sailors. The woman in Kavvadia’s work is one of the most central axes and he refers to her both with admiration, passion and nostalgia,  often unfulfilled. The poems “Fata Morgana”, “Marabu”, “Woman”, “Antimony”, “Thessaloniki” strongly contain the female presence and the sense of absence and search for lost or unknown love.

For Seferis, Kavvadias was the best operator of the Greek language. Parts of the ship, harbors and natural phenomena are described by means clearly influenced by literary texts of many previous authors. It seems that the interaction between the sea-born sailors and the admirer of Greek and foreign “poètes maudits”, the mixture of popularity and sophistication, compiled a neo-Romantic writing with vivid realistic elements and nautical idioms, putting him in complete contrast to aristocracy and boredom, with an unprecedented culture.

Kavvadias was then sailing in dangerous waters, this time metaphorically. In the ’40s, issues such as drugs, prostitutes, aphrodisiacs, racism towards the colored, and the harshness of the ports of the time were to be rejected and fingerprinted. In these years, in the midst of intense civil conflict, Kavvadia’s poetry, and in particular the “Pusi (Mist)” collection, was characterized by the journalist and critic of the time, Emilio Hurmuzio, as ” the poetry of escape”, apolitical and detached from reality. Easy tags from those who didn’t feel vague in entirely “misty” times.

The poet’s contact with art did not, of course, end with his study and literary influences. Due to the intense visualization of his work, his poetic collection “Pusi (Mist)” is accompanied by woodcuts by Moralis, Tasos, Vakalos, Korogiannakis, Dimou, and many others. On the cover of his poetic collection, “Traverse” is dominated by a Yannis Moralis work, while works by Yiannis Tsarouchis, a childhood friend and classmate of Kavvadia, co-decorated the poetic collection “Pusi” and one of the poets’ prose stories». Many of his poems were later composed by great composers, such as Thanos Mikroutsikos, Yiannis Spanos, Dimitris Zervoudakis, Mariza Koch, etc., who managed to make Kavvadia’s lyrics sung until present days. He passed away on February 10th, 1975, not being able to witness the effect his poetry had on the audience in general.

It would be a big mistake to remember Nikos Kavvadias as a “sailor poet” or a “seadog with a good pen”. His superficial theme may have been the sea, but his word penetrates the reader, making him forget the unknown words and nautical terms and become fascinated by his truth. The latent subject was always utopia; the personal utopia of the poet by which he thrusts people towards boldness, courage, and pursuit. As the great composer and man Thanos Mikroutsikos has said, “if we compare Kavvadia with an art painting, the painting might have been full of sailors and ships realistically painted, but surely some of the fish would fly out of the “water”.
