Do what i do
The two artists, Ilias Papailiakis and Nicolas Simantirakis, will present in a joint exhibition, entitled “Do what I do” drawings that have in common the material (pencil on paper), the dimension (15 x 21 cm) and exactly the same number of designs, 300 each. A total installation of 600 drawings.
The collaboration of the two artists, which started in the spring of 2020, aims at a common painting result. The freedom to choose the subject allows the artists to create images that come from themselves and are created spontaneously, automatically and uncensored.
Ilias Papailiakis, whose latest work is known also from his exhibition at the Municipal Gallery of the Municipality of Athens, creates images just by drawing a few simple lines. In his works he negotiates the limit, the “inside”, the “outside”, the minimum, the maximum.
Nikolas Simantirakis’ drawings, on the other hand, are inner landscapes, portraits, and compositions with solid forms and accentuated outlines. Here, meticulous analysis prevails in the processing of the form, the tonal qualities, the abundant emotional alternations, the full. That is, a great contrast in relation to the works of Papailiakis.
In their exhibition the drawings of one complement the drawings of the other and in every possible combination they have dialogue and content. The less and the more, the general and the specific, the empty and the full: these dipoles create new images and meanings.
