Distortion, delay and reverb
Nikos Sarlis’ Exhibition
In his first solo show, the artist Nikos Sarlis will present his latest large-scale paintings on paper. Either as waveforms of sound distortion, as indicated by the chosen title or as experimentations with the material, the tradition of the great masters, and the current issues in painting; his work leaves no space for questioning the medium while constantly keeping the viewer’s interest alive. His paintings, having created a multilayered and processed surface while simultaneously achieving an almost digital flatness, invite the viewer to look carefully and observe. The colour as light and the light as an extension of the sound, are refined through sound distortion effects, simulating either natural or imaginary spaces that suggest a visualized music.
Nikolaos Sarlis was born in Athens in 1988. He studied painting at Athens School of Fine Arts (under the supervision of T. Christakis), and graduated with distinction in 2013. He then followed the postgraduate program in Visual Arts at Athens School of Fine Arts (2013-2015). He has also attended courses at the Department of Physics at the Kapodistrian University of Athens (2006-08). In 2011, he attended for one academic semester the MA Painting Course at the Department of Arts Plastiques of the University Paris 8, under an Erasmus scholarship from the Hellenic State Scholarship Foundation. His work also involves the composition and production of music.
