Solo exhibition of paintings

KALLIOPI ASARGIOTAKI

Desert Rose

11 Meninas Cor-de-Rosa 2016, watercolour on canvas, 211 x 151 cm

The solo exhibition with works by artist Kalliopi Asargiotaki, curated by art historian Elizabeth Plessa, will be inaugurated on Thursday 23 Februry 2017, at 20.00. The exhibition will close on Saturday 18 March 2017.

Kalliopi Asargiotaki presents at Skoufa Gallery in Athens a group of new works, which she created during the last two years. On white canvases of large dimensions, watercolour is her sole material: worked with very fine brushes, exclusively in the tones of a ruby rose, it gives her images the linearity of drawings and the precision of prints. As if seen through a veil, monumental female figures hold the leading role in these works. Dressed with intricate fabrics and heavy jewellery, Asargiotaki’s women embody a precious rendering of the painted surface, which here becomes a work-handiwork. Images void of time, dreamlike, they emit through the very way that they are depicted the sensuality of melancholy, which disagrees with the connotations usually attributed to pink colour because it reminds of the need for a painting that needs time – the time it requires to be devoted to it, as well as the time it requires to be viewed.
